Local Rotarians attend annual Helena Saluting Branches

(Townsend September 22) On September 19, 43 arborists and other volunteers from Helena, Great Falls, Missoula, Bozeman, Townsned, and Livingston gathered in Helena at the Ft. Harrison State Veterans’ Cemetery and VA Fealth Care System Facility as part of the second annual Helena Saluting Branches event. 

Townsend was well represented by volunteers from the American Legion Post #42, the Rotary Club of Townsend, the Townsend Tree Board, and the Association of Montana Turf, Ornamental , and Pest Control Professionals. In addition, Townsend businesses and organizations donated supplies for the event incluuding safety equipment donated by Graymont and the Townsend Tree Board, tables and chairs donated by the Legion and Rotary, and pruning equipmnt donated by Plants, Etc.

Patrick Plantenberg was Site Leader for the event. Jennifer Dalrymple, Linda Cousineau, and Trudie Southwck were other Townsend volunteers at the event. An impressive array of arborist tree care machinery showed up for the event including 4 bucket trucks, 3 chippers, a mechanized graggle saw tree removal system, a grapple truck, a grapple laoder, and a stump grinder. In additon, several tree climbers from around Montana showed up with all their gear to climb and prune trees.

Work accomplished included pruning all small trees, removing 4 large trees, grinding 14 stumps, and pruning over 20 large trees. Breakfast , lunch, safety gear, and other supplies needed for the event were donated by local sponsors. Over 300 hours of volunteer service were donated by the arborists.

Nationwide, more than 2,700 green industry professionals donated a full day’s work on Wednesday to honor America’s military service men and women. Saluting Branches: Arborists United for Veteran Remembrance, a nonprofit organization, marked its fourth-annual day of service and is the largest volunteer event in the tree care industry. With support by industry leaders; including Rainbow Treecare, ACRT, Inc., The Davey Tree Expert Company, STIHL®, SavATree, Petzl®, and others, Saluting Branches cared for thousands of trees at 51 national and state veterans cemeteriesand other VA facilities across the country this year.

Millions of Americans pay their respects each year at national and state veterans’ cemeteries and other veterans’ properties. Saluting Branches brings together arborist experts to improve the beauty and safety of the trees located in these hallowed sites.
