The Rotary Club of Townsend is the Fun Club. For a city of 2,000 people, the club has the most members per capita of any Rotary Club in our District with 60. The club is the most active service organization in Townsend!
We support local youth. The club sent four students to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp in July. The club traditionally gives three scholarships totaling $3,500 to graduating seniors from Broadwater County High School. This year the club gave five scholarships totaling $4,500. The club also funded new rubber mats for the high school weight room.
The club supports our senior citizens. We sponsor bingo at the Nursing Home once a month. Every Holiday season the club co-sponsors with the Broadwater Lions Club a Senior Dinner and Holiday Light Tour. For those that can’t attend the dinner and tour we deliver poinsettias to their homes.
The Club supports other community events including Shakespeare in the Park, the Social Services Committee, Highway Cleanup, Heritage Gardens, the Food Pantry, and others as needed.
This year, Club member Ron Salladay initiated building a new 4H building kitchen at the Fairgrounds. See the separate side bar article in this insert.
The Club developed and co-sponsors with many organizations in Townsend the Slice of Summer celebration. Slice of Summer is a community-sponsored family fun, non-alcoholic event held on the third Thursday of June, July, and August each year at Heritage Fun Park. Youth activities include free use of the swimming pool, bouncy toys, a climbing wall, face painting, and arts and crafts. Family activities include free musical entertainment and reasonably priced food including hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, nachos, watermelon, ice cream, floats, and various non-alcoholic refreshments. In 2016, Slice of Summer featured music by Stonehouse, Lonestar, and the August finale included the Cold Hard Cash Show.
Our biggest event and fundraiser is the Townsend Fall Fest held the first weekend in October annually in Heritage Fun Park. There is no charge to attend! This year’s event was bigger and better than ever. This year featured a new and better stage, sound system, and a Jumbotron displaying our many sponsors and music lineup. The Fall Fest features free music all weekend starting on Friday night all paid for by our many generous sponsors. Over 90 vendors sold their wares and food. This year a wind, rain, and hail storm dampened the event on Saturday afternoon. The Club is sorry to say that some vendors lost some inventory in the storm.
There was a Veteran’s ceremony on Saturday featuring Jack Gladstone. Sunday featured a classic car show on Broadway and a DJ playing oldies but goodies. This year the Club featured Orphan Cars and 225 cars showed up. Over 10,000 people attended the fun-filled weekend event. The Rotary Club sells beer and our famous Townsend-made Bob’s Supermarket brats!
Come join us for some fun while serving our community. The Club meet the second and fourth Tuesdays at 6:30pm in the backroom of the Mint Restaurant on Broadway. For more information about the Rotary Club of Townsend, please call President Ross Johnson at 465-7040.
