(Townsend December 1) On November 27, Loren Acton, the only Montana-born astronaut spoke to the Rotary Club. Loren was born in the Lewistown, Montana area and explained to the Club how a small town boy from Montana was able to grow up and become a crew member on the Challenger. Loren was educated at Montana State University and eventually received a doctorate in solar physics. He was charged with taking x-ray pictures of the sun and showed the Club some of the pictures he took from space.

(Townsend December 1) On Thursday November 29th, the Rotary Club of Helena Sunrise and the Rotary Club of Townsend sponsored their annual Trivia/Chili Feed fundraising event for a Townsend cause. This year the $1,342 raised will be used to help pay for the Rotary-sponsored youth Interact Club service trip to Guatemala. The kids will be spending some time in June helping a group called Maya Pedal modify bicycles into machines that can be used by local villagers without power to grind flour, pump water, etc.

(Townsend December 1) On November 27th, Keith Hartman and Phil Clark were sworn in by Rotary Club President Jeff Langlinais and took the oath to serve as a Rotarian and to provide ‘Service above Self”. Rotary’s six new members in the last three months will help ensure Rotary continues its vital role in our community.

(Townsend November 18) The Helena Sunrise Club and the Rotary Club of Townsend will be hosting their annual TRIVIA Fundraiser on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at the Legion. This year the fundraiser will be to help raise money for the Rotary Sponsored Youth Interact Club of Townsend’s trip to Guatemala in June 2019. The interact Club students will be headed to Guatemala for a service project. The trip will cost about $1,400 per student.

(Townsend November 19) On November 13, Rotary Club of Townsend President Jeff Langlinais inducted the new Rotary Sponsored Youth Interact Club of Townsend officers for 2018-2019. This begins the second official year of the Interact Club which has been very busy since its inception in Winter 2018. The Interact Club is a community-based youth Rotary club for students ages 12-18. Rotarian, Jennifer Lane is the new Club Advisor replacing Beth Ihle who took a new job in Silver City, NM.

On Halloween, five members of the local Rotary Club passed out goodie bags to the residents at Broadwater Health Center. This is an annual event for Rotarians which the residents as well as Rotarians enjoy immensely.

On October 29, Rotary Club of Townsend members passed out dictionaries to the third graders at Cecelia Hazelton Elementary School. Montana Rotary District 5390 dues fund this statewide project in Montana. It is always a pleasure to see the kids looking at their very own new dictionary.

The 2018 Rotary Slice of Summer celebrations ended with a special flourish on August 16th. Free youth activities included swimming, face painting, four bouncy toys, and the Elkhorn Community Fellowship climbing wall. Rotary sold Full Beli Deli pizza and cotton candy. The Lions sold hamburgers, hot dogs, and nachos. The Close Up kids sold ice cream, root beer floats, beverages, popcorn, and candy to raise money for their trip to Washington, DC.

Rotary Club of Townsend volunteers are offering Kids Learn to Skate Lessons. Rotarians are available after 4:30 pm on weekdays and on Saturdays. To schedule an appointment, please call Patrick Plantenberg at 431-4615. Townsend Skating Rink LLC has skates available at the rink at Holloway Park.

On Jan 6, 2018 the Townsend Rotary Club held our annual Holiday Party at the old Masonic Hall in Townsend -- courtesy of the building owner Tina Edelblut. Dinner was catered by Chef Rex Dunbar featuring brisket, smashed red potatoes, salad and rolls. The Rotary members and spouses contributed deserts in the Great Holiday Dessert competition.
The Rotary members performed an hilarious skit "Bus Ride to Everywhere" with vignettes highlighting different themes.
